Sizing — measure the laptop, not the screen

Screen sizes are measured diagonally, and two 13-inch laptops can have noticeably different footprints. Measure the closed laptop’s width, depth and thickness, then check those against the sleeve’s internal dimensions on the product page. A sleeve a centimetre too big lets the machine slide, which is what causes corner damage in a bag.

Sleeve or hard case?

• A sleeve protects against scratches, bumps and the other contents of your bag. It comes off when you work.
• A hard shell stays on the laptop permanently and guards the lid and base, but adds bulk and traps heat under sustained load.

Most people who carry a laptop daily want a sleeve. A shell makes more sense if the machine lives on a desk and gets knocked rather than transported.
