Getting the size right

A cover should be very slightly smaller than the insert, not larger. A 45 cm insert in a 45 cm cover gives the plump, filled look you see in photographs. Match the cover to the insert you already own and the cushion holds its shape; size up and it sags at the corners.

How many cushions, and in what mix

The arrangement that works on most sofas is odd-numbered and layered rather than matched:

• Two larger covers at the outer edges, in a plain or textured weave
• Two mid-size in a pattern picking up one colour from the room
• One smaller accent in the middle, usually the boldest of the set

Buying five covers in one identical print is the most common way to make a sofa look like a showroom display rather than a room someone lives in.

Care

Remove the insert before washing. Cold wash, gentle cycle, inside out to protect any print, and line dry out of direct sun — local sun fades dyed cotton quickly. Iron on the reverse.
