Apple Watch bands come in two fittings, and the number on the band is the case size of the watch, not the size of your wrist. Bands labelled 38/40/41mm fit the smaller cases; bands labelled 42/44/45/49mm fit the larger ones, including the Apple Watch Ultra. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap General, then About, and read the Model Name line — it gives the series and the case size in millimetres. You can also read the size engraved on the back of the watch case.

Order the 38/40/41mm band if you have:

• Series 1, 2 or 3 at 38mm
• Series 4, 5 or 6 at 40mm
• SE, SE 2 or SE 3 at 40mm
• Series 7, 8 or 9 at 41mm
• Series 10 or Series 11 at 42mm

Order the 42/44/45/49mm band if you have:

• Series 1, 2 or 3 at 42mm
• Series 4, 5 or 6 at 44mm

Watch out for 42mm. Apple used that number twice. The original 42mm on Series 1 to 3 is the larger of its pair and takes the large band. The 42mm on Series 10 and 11 is the smaller of its pair and takes the small band. If you own a recent watch at 42mm, order 38/40/41mm.

Which band style suits how you wear the watch?

• Ridge loop and sport loop — woven nylon with a hook-and-loop closure. Infinitely adjustable, breathable, and the most comfortable option to sleep in or train in.
• Silicone sport band — the default for the gym and the pool. Rinses clean, does not hold sweat, and survives chlorine and salt water.
• Braided and stretch bands — no buckle at all; the band stretches over the hand. Fastest to put on, best for a watch worn all day.
• Leather and vegan leather — dresses the watch up for the office or an evening. Keep it away from water and sweat.
• Clear and translucent bands — light, waterproof, and they show the watch case through them.

In the Gulf summer humidity, nylon and silicone are the practical everyday choices; leather is better kept for air-conditioned days and evenings.

Fitting and removing a band

Lay the watch face down. Hold down the band release button on the back of the case and slide the old band out sideways. Slide the new band in from the same side until it clicks. It takes seconds and needs no tools. If a band will not slide in, do not force it — it is almost always the wrong size group rather than a faulty band, and forcing it damages the channel in the case.

Nylon loops can be hand-washed in cool water with a drop of mild soap and air-dried flat. Silicone should be rinsed after a workout. Leather should be wiped with a dry cloth only.

Read the case size in the Watch app on your iPhone under General, then About, or from the engraving on the back of the watch. Cases of 38mm, 40mm, 41mm and the Series 10 or 11 42mm take the smaller band. Cases of 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, 49mm and the original Series 1 to 3 42mm take the larger one.

Will these bands fit an Apple Watch Ultra?
