Living

Living covers the soft furnishings that change a room without changing the furniture — cushion covers and throws from Yellow Dwelling and Them. Cushion covers make up most of the range and come in the standard sizes, so they fit inserts you already own.

Cushion cover sizes, and which to use where

• 16 x 16 inches — small accent cushions, armchairs, and layering in front of larger ones.
• 18 x 18 inches — the default. If you are unsure what size your cushions are, they are probably these.
• 20 x 20 inches — deeper sofas, where an 18-inch cushion disappears into the back.
• 24 x 24 inches — floor cushions and the back layer on a large sectional.
• 12 x 20 inches — lumbar cushions, which support the lower back rather than decorate.

Buy the insert one to two inches larger than the cover. An 18-inch cover on an 18-inch insert looks flat and half-filled; the same cover on a 20-inch insert looks plump and expensive. This one detail makes more visual difference than the fabric does.

Arranging cushions so a sofa does not look staged

Odd numbers read as natural and even numbers read as symmetrical. On a three-seat sofa, five cushions is the reliable arrangement: two large at each end, one lumbar off-centre. Mix one print with two plains rather than three prints, and repeat one colour from the print in the plains so the group holds together.

Change covers seasonally rather than buying new cushions. Storing flat covers takes almost no space, and it is the cheapest way to make a living room feel different twice a year.

Fabrics in this range

• Cotton — breathable, easy to wash, and the most forgiving in a hot room. Best for cushions that get sat against.
• Printed linen — a looser, more textured weave with a natural slub. It creases, which is part of the look.
• Blends — hold colour longer and crease less, at the cost of a slightly flatter surface.

All of them fade in direct sun, so keep strongly coloured covers off a cushion that sits in a west-facing window all afternoon.

Common questions about Living

What size cushion cover do I need?

Measure an existing cover flat, corner seam to corner seam, and buy that size. 18 x 18 inches is the most common. Then use an insert one to two inches larger than the cover so the cushion looks full rather than flat.

Do the cushion covers come with inserts?

No. These are covers only, which is what makes them an inexpensive way to change a room. Use the inserts you already have, sized one to two inches larger than the cover.

Can cushion covers be machine washed?

Yes, cool with like colours and without bleach. Turn them inside out first, close any zip before washing, and dry in shade — direct sun fades printed cotton and linen quickly.

How many cushions should a sofa have?

Odd numbers look more natural. Five works on a three-seat sofa: a pair of large cushions at each end and one lumbar cushion placed off-centre. Mix one printed cover with two plain ones rather than three prints.
