If you need things to stay findable, look for one with an internal pocket, or put a small pouch inside for cables and keys.

Choosing one

• Handle drop — a short handle is a hand-carry bag. A drop of roughly 25 cm or more clears a shoulder, including over a coat.
• Base — a flat, gusseted base lets the bag stand up on its own. A flat unstructured tote folds over when you set it down.
• Closure — a zip or magnetic snap matters more than people expect if you carry a laptop in traffic.

Care

Canvas totes wash cold and air-dry. Vegan leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and should not go in a machine.
