A tote’s strength is that it swallows odd shapes — a laptop, a water bottle, a folder, a jumper — without you having to plan. Its weakness is that everything ends up at the bottom in one pile. If you need things to stay findable, look for one with an internal pocket, or put a small pouch inside for cables and keys.
Choosing one
- Handle drop — a short handle is a hand-carry bag. A drop of roughly 25 cm or more clears a shoulder, including over a coat.
- Base — a flat, gusseted base lets the bag stand up on its own. A flat unstructured tote folds over when you set it down.
- Closure — a zip or magnetic snap matters more than people expect if you carry a laptop in traffic.
Care
Canvas totes wash cold and air-dry. Vegan leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and should not go in a machine.
